Africa and African economies are at the heart of what we do. Penguide is organised around three key activities, all focused on Africa and African economies: research, legal and policy advisory and provision of training and training materials. We pride ourselves on our ability to assemble the right mix of experts to deliver on cutting edge services for our clients. Our multi-jurisdictional network and research experience ensure that we provide our clients with practical, globally applicable solutions to their legal issues and needs.
The Penguide
The Penguide is the online persona of Dr. Chijioke Ifeoma Okorie. Where appropriate, The Penguide – Dr Chijioke Okorie – works with a consortium specifically assembled in preparation for relevant projects. The consortium is a highly knowledgeable team of experts and researchers, not only in intellectual property (IP) law but also in the areas of media, entertainment, and sports; science, technology and communications. The consortium converges under Penguide Advisory to undertake relevant projects.
After 7 years at a leading commercial law firm in Nigeria, Chijioke founded Penguide Associates in 2011. In 2018, Penguide Associates was changed to Penguide Advisory in recognition of the firm’s focus on Africa and research-backed advice and training. In addition to overseeing Penguide’s business and contributing to our research, she is the author of several peer-reviewed journal publications as well as various electronic publications. Her book, Multi-sided Music Platforms and the Law: Copyright, Law and Policy in Africa published by Routledge in 2020 has been acknowledged as the first work that considers multi-sided platforms from copyright, competition and privacy law perspectives under South African and Nigerian law. Chijioke divides her time between Lagos (Nigeria) and Pretoria (South Africa).
Chijioke founded Penguide in 2011 after a 7-year stint at a leading commercial law firm in Lagos, Nigeria. Chijioke is also a lecturer in the Department of Private Law and Senior Researcher at the Centre for Intellectual Property Law, all at the University of Pretoria (South Africa). Her teaching extends beyond the classroom and she has built and taught bespoke curricula at professional and community levels. Chijioke is the author of several peer-reviewed journal publications as well as various electronic publications on subjects relating to intellectual property and technology in Africa. Her book, Multi-sided Music Platforms and the Law: Copyright, Law and Policy in Africa published by Routledge in 2020 has been acknowledged as the first work that considers multi-sided platforms from copyright, competition and privacy law perspectives under South African and Nigerian law.
Chijioke received her PhD in Digital Intellectual Property Law from University of Cape Town (South Africa) and has a Masters degree (LLM) in Internet Law and Policy from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow). She was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2006 and is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP), South African Association of Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology Law Teachers and Researchers (AIPLITL), Nigerian Association of Teachers and Researches of Intellectual Property (NATRIP), Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, etc. More information on Chijioke’s work is available on her personal website
